A lizard in the hand…

Thursday, June 1, 2006, 2:29 pm

Lizards run around in our office all the time, but this morning, one of them rode around on my finger.

When I saw how still it was sitting, I wanted to take a picture. I started rummaging around with my left hand, trying to find a camera. I did, but it wouldn’t turn on. Dead batteries? Not sure. Maski. I went looking for another camera, unlocking doors, opening and closing drawers, and flipping on lights.

Meanwhile, the lizard sat quietly on my right index finger.

Unable to find another camera, I found a package of batteries, opened it, took out the camera’s dead batteries, put in the fresh ones, and turned on the camera — all with my left hand.

I disregarded the camera’s obnoxious warning that the date wasn’t set (I could fix the Exif data later) and concentrated on holding the camera with only my left hand. The shutter release, of course, is on the right side, but I managed.

Here’s lookin’ at you!

You can see the lizard’s ear, scales, and stripey toes — and my fingerprint.

I had to be outside to get the exposure right. The lizard got more active, scampering along my hand until it finally dropped to the ground below and ran off through the flower bed.
