SALT: Thirst for God’s Word

Wednesday, April 5, 2006, 10:59 pm

Some of you may remember that I covered a SALT Course on Wuvulu Island last July.

SALT (short for Scripture Application and Leadership Training) is a two-week course designed to help people study God’s Word in their mother tongue and to help Christian leaders use the Scriptures effectively.

Mick Bandy, here waxing eloquent at the Wuvulu course, started the SALT Project in PNG.

SALT Courses include both teaching times and outreach times. During the latter, participants travel through their communities, sharing with others what they are learning. The lessons cover basic Biblical truths like the nature and character of God, the sinfulness of man, the way to salvation, and living as children of God. Some participants have exclaimed that they understand these truths for the first time now that they hear them in their own language.

The program is designed to be staffed by short-term volunteers. Teams or individuals can come to PNG for a few months, receive orientation and training, and then participate in a SALT Course or two, preparing materials and teaching some of the lessons — with an interpreter, of course.

For more information about the project, and for reports and pictures from several previous courses, check out the SALT Project’s blog.
