Woodpecker ID quiz

2009 March 15
by David J. Ringer

DENVER, COLO. — I’m in the Denver airport, waiting to board my plane. I got out for some birding this morning, and I photographed this woodpecker. I’ll have time to post more later but wanted to get at least something up as soon as possible. So, the woodpecker. Any thoughts?

My guess is a Three-toed Woodpecker. Female. Hope I’m right. And I hope I helped.

I think Laura K nailed it. The bird looks very similar to Hairy Woodpecker, but the barring on the white flanks favors Three-toed (“American Three-toed” if we’re going that far), plus I’d expect more white on the head if it were a Hairy. I don’t see any yellow on the cap, which fits female. Regardless, nice shot, you must have been in a great birding site!

Yes, good job both of you. See more details at my followup post, Nibbling at the Rockies.
