Pulling up roots again
GREENE CO., MO. — Cardinals, robis, House Finches, chickadees, and titmice have all begun to sing. Yesterday a Turkey Vulture soared uneasily over the neighborhood. The bluebirds are examing our box again, chasing away the occasional starling or chickadee.
Pine Warblers weren’t back on Wednesday, when Charley and I drove around the Mark Twain National Forest trying to find them. Or perhaps they were just hiding, silent and still. Hermit Thrushes were there, and the Great Blue Herons stood guard on their nests high in the sycamore trees.
An Inca Dove was hanging around the Springfield Conservation and Nature Center’s parking lot, but it has not been seen since last Tuesday, the day before Charley tried to show it to me.
Yesterday, I realized consciously for the first time that I will totally miss the wood warblers this year. That’s going to be rough, I think.
But birds-of-paradise, here I come.

Good luck, David. I hope we’ll be hearing from you and your birds of paradise in PNG.
