Last looks

CENTRAL FLORIDA — A pair of Sandhill Cranes stood just inches from the road, prompting an involuntary exclamation from me. They were so close that I could see their scarlet irises, just below their deep red crowns. Would I ever get used to birds like that?

There were more sandhills along the roads, and hundreds of gulls in the sky. A mucky puddle along the highway entrance ramp held a collection of egrets and several Wood Storks — huge, weird, gone as we zipped on by. With that, it was goodbye. For now.

(More about Florida soon!)
