Warm-winter birds

RUSK CO., TEXAS — I drove out to CR 254 in the morning and picked up several East Texas winter birds. The pond held one cormorant (they hang around on the half-submerged barrels) and only a few ducks (ring-necks). A Great Egret flew over, flashing brilliant white in the sun. A Red-shouldered Hawk circled high. Savannah Sparrows frequented the roadsides. An Orange-crowned Warbler, a Brown Thrasher, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets skulked in the brush near the creek.
